I had never thought I’d be in a long distance relationship in my life.
Yes, I love to travel, but the possibility of actually meeting someone during a trip was a thought I gave little attention to. For some reason I always believed I would find my Prince Charming somewhere in my hometown, but no – he was waiting for me in France. Well, no… in Italy actually…
Anyways (I’ll let you guys know of my romantic-ish love story in a separate post), I’ve learned a lot of different positive and negative aspects of being in a long distance relationship. But one obvious thing is that it requires a lot of effort– but just like any other general relationship.
As for me, I’m beyond happy and let me tell you why…
YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE ON THE PLANET WAITING FOR YOU
It’s a nice feeling to know that someone halfway around the world (in my situation) is waiting for me. Anyone could easily decide to find someone conveniently closer to them, but it’s wonderful to know that someone is choosing you despite the distance.
THEY’RE YOUR FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOU WAKE UP & LAST THOUGHT BEFORE YOU FALL ASLEEP
Well… what else would you think about?…
ONE OF YOU (OR BOTH) WILL HAVE TO TRAVEL TO VISIT EACH OTHER
Never think of traveling for the other as a burden! It’s always great to travel and you’ll enjoy it either way! On my last trip to see my boyfriend, we had both decided to meet each other in London, and it was fun to pick him up from the train station rather than the usual him picking me up from the airports in Paris.
YOU LEARN TO TRUST ONE ANOTHER FROM AFAR
This is by far one of the main reasons relationships either go all the way or fail, and one of the most difficult things too (at least in the beginning when the relationship is forming). But it’s important to put your trust in them as they will do likewise. Happy trust = happy relationship!
YOU CONSTANTLY MISS ONE ANOTHER
This is inevitable! But don’t get upset about always missing them… it’s not a terrible thing, you know.
YOU LEARN HOW TO APPRECIATE EACH OTHER BETTER
This goes based off from the fact that you’re both always missing each other. You begin to think of the little details about them that helps you learn to appreciate them a lot more than before.
VIDEO CHATS BECOME THE MAIN THING YOU ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO
You have to see each other somehow, right? My video chats with him are my favorite part of the day (night time for him). So, plan out the right time to put aside every day to chat with one another, especially if time difference plays a huge factor in your relationship, like mine.
YOU BOTH BEGIN TO SLOWLY PLAN A FUTURE TOGETHER
Before you know it, you’ll start to plan out where you both want to travel together in the future, where you both want to live together… how many children you’ll be raising, etc!
YOU FEEL COMPLETE WITH ONE ANOTHER WHEN PHYSICALLY TOGETHER
And this is the best part. Literally no other greater feeling than when you’re both actually together in person!
YOU RELY ON YOUR PHOTOS TO BRING WONDERFUL MEMORIES BACK TO LIFE
Photos are so so sooo important!! They’ll be exactly what you depend on when you’re missing your significant other. I always like to send him a couple of random photos of us together with cute captions whenever he’s sleeping.
EACH GOODBYE BECOMES EVEN MORE DIFFICULT
This is the most painful part for me whenever I go visit my boyfriend because it is so unbelievably true. Each time you both see each other, you both get even closer, which makes every goodbye harder than the last because it becomes more meaningful.
DISTANCE BECOMES INSIGNIFICANT
After being together for a while, flying back and forth, staying committed to each other, and trusting one another, the distance doesn’t seem like a problem anymore. It isn’t a problem anymore… just a slight inconvenience that will go away one day.
These are many of the positive sides of being in a long distance relationship. Even though there will always be a few negative sides too (like the obvious fact that you are both literally far from one another), they truly are not worth thinking about because positive always beats the negative!!!
